Xylocaine 2% Jelly (lidocaine HCl) is a sterile water-based jelly for topical use that provides local anaesthesia and lubrication. In Australian clinical settings, it is used to help prevent and control pain during procedures involving the male and female urethra, for the topical treatment of painful urethritis, and as an anaesthetic lubricant for endotracheal intubation (oral and nasal).

This product contains 2% lidocaine hydrochloride (20 mg/mL). Because using too much, or using doses too close together, can lead to high blood levels and serious side effects, use the lowest effective dose and follow your clinician's instructions.
Xylocaine 2% Jelly works by temporarily blocking nerve signals when it comes into contact with mucous membranes, helping to reduce pain during urological procedures and providing lubrication for instruments. It is not intended for injection or neuraxial (spinal/epidural) use.
Xylocaine (lidocaine HCl) 2% Jelly is commonly supplied in 5 mL and 30 mL tubes (20 mg/mL). Packaging details may vary by manufacturer.
In Australia, the dose varies depending on the procedure, the area being anaesthetised, and the patient's condition. Reduced doses are recommended for children and for elderly or debilitated patients.
Maximum dosage: no more than 600 mg of lidocaine HCl (equivalent to 30 mL of 2% jelly) should be given in any 12-hour period.
Examples from clinical labelling (adults): for male urethral anaesthesia, approximately 15 mL (300 mg) may be instilled; an additional dose of up to 15 mL (300 mg) may be used if needed. For female urethral anaesthesia, approximately 3-5 mL (60-100 mg) may be instilled. In Australia, only a clinician should determine the appropriate dose for your situation.
If you are using this medicine on a schedule and miss a dose, use it when you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose.
Using too much, using it too often, or applying it to damaged or infected mucosa can be harmful and may cause systemic effects (for example, dizziness, drowsiness, ringing in the ears, tremor, seizures, or an abnormal heart rhythm). If someone collapses, has a seizure, has trouble breathing, or can't be woken, call 000. For suspected poisoning in Australia, call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26.
Do not use Xylocaine 2% Jelly if you have a known allergy to lidocaine (amide-type local anaesthetics) or any component of the product.
The toxic effects of local anaesthetics are additive. Tell your Australian clinician about all medicines you use, especially if you may receive other local anaesthetics.
Cases of methemoglobinaemia have been reported with local anaesthetic use. Get medical help promptly if you notice grey/blue skin (cyanosis), unusual shortness of breath, fatigue, or a rapid heart rate.
When used as a lubricant for endotracheal intubation, apply the jelly to the outside of the endotracheal tube shortly before use. Avoid introducing the product into the lumen of the tube, and do not use the jelly to lubricate endotracheal stylettes.
Store at room temperature: 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Keep out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack.

I live outside Mount Isa rather than in a major city. How can I find out whether you can deliver the ointment to my area?
Add the product to your basket and enter your Mount Isa delivery details at checkout. Availability for the address is shown there before you place the order.
My parcel reached the Gold Coast on a very hot day. What should I check before using the Xylocaine ointment?
Check that the tube is intact, not leaking and still within its expiry date, then review the labelled storage instructions: store at 20°C to 25°C, with excursions from 15°C to 30°C permitted. Because the actual temperature and duration of heat exposure are unknown, do not assume suitability if those conditions may have been exceeded.
I ordered Xylocaine 5% ointment, but the tube I received says jelly. Should I use it anyway?
No. Do not use it until the discrepancy is checked. Compare the active ingredient, strength, dosage form, manufacturer, lot number and expiry date on the package with your order details.
I have significant liver disease and need numbing relief for a small painful skin area. Is Xylocaine 5% ointment suitable for me?
Lidocaine that is absorbed into the bloodstream is mainly broken down by the liver. Small topical applications on intact skin usually result in low absorption, but use over large areas, broken skin or mucosal surfaces can increase exposure, so suitability and dose limits need to be assessed by your treating clinician.
