FAQ

Eurax (crotamiton) is an antiparasitic medicine that kills certain parasites which live on the skin or lay eggs in the skin.

Crotamiton's antiparasitic effect is linked to disruption of ionic permeability through sodium channels and inhibition of repolarization of the insect nerve cell membrane, which leads to paralysis. After cutaneous application, absorption is not more than 2%.

Possible side effects include burning or stinging, tingling, numbness, increased itching, erythema, and allergic reactions such as skin rash or swelling.

Description

Note: Images in the description are provided for informational purposes and may differ from the actual appearance of the product. Please refer to the product name, strength, active ingredients, and dosage form.

Scabies does not require hospital treatment. In Australia, a dermatologist will prescribe an individual treatment plan for each patient, depending on how severe the condition is and the clinical signs.

Benefits of Eurax cream

Medicines for scabies should have the following characteristics:

  • work against mites and their larvae as quickly and effectively as possible;
  • be cleared from the body quickly;
  • have minimal side effects;
  • be affordable and easy to use;
  • not stain clothes and have no strong smell.

In most cases, the skin does not react when the female mite enters the stratum corneum of the epidermis, so there is no inflammatory component in the burrow and the clinical picture is dominated by the typical, intact form of scabies. On the skin, this looks like a slightly raised, dirty-grey line, straight or curved, 5-7 mm long. However, an inflammatory reaction may develop later.

What Is Eurax

Eurax (crotamiton) is an antiparasitic medicine that kills certain parasites that live on your skin or lay eggs in it. Even with effective treatment, it is important not only to treat the affected areas of skin but also to disinfect household items the infected person has touched, to help avoid reinfection. You should use disposable gloves during treatment and wash your hands thoroughly afterwards. Modern manufacturers offer a wide range of products that differ not only in form but also in composition. Active ingredients that may be used include:

  • sulfur;
  • permethrin;
  • benzyl benzoate.

These active ingredients cause paralysis of the parasites' respiratory and digestive functions, leading to their death. Ointments and other topical preparations are often effective because they act directly on the affected areas. Before treatment, it is important to ventilate the room well and take care to avoid getting the medicine on mucous membranes. These products should be used strictly according to the instructions, and you should check the contraindications carefully when choosing a suitable treatment. Treatment can usually be done at home, as a person's general condition is usually not affected.

Eurax is widely used to treat scabies caused by scabies mites. This intradermal parasite can get onto a person's epidermis, burrow into it, and begin reproducing actively. As a result, scabies burrows appear, where the female lays eggs.

If used correctly, the cream should be enough for a full course of treatment. The product comes as an ointment in a 20 gram tube and as a 60 gram lotion. Consumers give positive feedback about the product, so given its effectiveness, the price is considered low. Crotamiton is the main ingredient in Eurax cream. This substance relieves itching and has a harmful effect on the cause of the infestation.

Drug Details

The instructions include a full description of Eurax lotion for scabies. If a patient is diagnosed with scabies, the ointment should be applied to the skin from the chin down to the lower limbs. The skin should be cleaned with water beforehand. The procedure can be repeated after 24 hours; this is usually enough to destroy the parasite.

Additional information
You can find more information about Eurax cream (crotamiton) here:

Eurax should not be used in pregnancy unless clearly needed and prescribed by a doctor, and it should not be applied to skin that is acutely inflamed, raw, weeping or actively bleeding. It can also cause side effects, including skin redness and other allergic reactions.

How To Use Eurax Lotion

Eurax lotion should be applied to the whole body, from the neck down to the toes. For babies and young children, consult an Australian doctor, as safety and effectiveness in children have not been established.

  • Wash your baby well and dry the skin before applying it.
  • Wear disposable gloves during treatment.
  • Apply the medicine with light rubbing motions, moving from top to bottom.
  • Make sure you thoroughly treat areas where burrows are present.
  • Don't forget hard-to-reach areas such as bends and skin folds.
  • Do not wash the product off before the instructions say to. This may be from 8 hours to 24 hours. If you wash it off your hands, remember to reapply it.
  • Explain to your child that they should not lick treated areas of skin. Small children should wear mittens.
  • Be sure to wash anything that has come into contact with the infected person, including clothes, bedding and towels. These can be washed in hot water (at least 50°C (122°F)), ironed, or sealed tightly in plastic and stored for at least three days, as the parasites will die without food.

Pharmacological Action

The pharmacological action of crotamiton in scabies is antiparasitic and insecticidal. It works against lice, fleas, mites (including scabies mites) and other ectoparasites in the arthropod family; it reduces their development and causes the death of larvae, nits and reproducing parasites.

Eurax has scabicidal and antipruritic effects, although the mechanisms behind these effects are not known. The pharmacokinetics of crotamiton and the degree of systemic absorption after topical application have not been determined.

Indications

The main sign of scabies is itching, which gets worse after hot baths and at night, so the patient's sleep may become restless and broken. A child starts to scratch because of an allergic reaction. Itching begins a few weeks after infection, and with reinfection the first signs may appear after a couple of days. The incubation period for scabies usually lasts 4 to 6 weeks. If the patient has had this infection before, symptoms may appear after 1 to 4 days.

Scabies can often be recognised by the many small rashes in the form of red spots and papules. In children under 2 years of age, the rash most often appears on the palms, feet, head and neck. In older children, rashes appear between the fingers, in the folds and bends of the wrists and elbows, as well as on the waist, thighs, buttocks and genitals.

Mites not only live on the human body but also lay eggs there, forming small tunnels visible on the skin. These are thin, winding grey or white lines that look like pencil marks.

Scratching itchy areas can lead to new infections, inflammation and redness. Therefore, at the first signs of scabies, parents should stop self-treating and contact a doctor promptly to relieve the acute symptoms and prescribe the right treatment.

Dosage And Administration

Scabies: Thoroughly massage into the skin of the whole body, from the chin down, paying particular attention to all folds and creases. A second application is advisable 24 hours later. Clothing and bed linen should be changed the next morning. A cleansing bath should be taken 48 hours after the last application.

Crotamiton Side Effects

Local reactions: burning or stinging, tingling, numbness, increased itching, erythema, allergic reactions (skin rashes, swelling).

Contraindications of topical crotamiton (Eurax/Crotan):

  • hypersensitivity to crotamiton (or allergy to product components) or a primary irritation response to topical medicines;
  • do not apply to acutely inflamed skin or to raw or weeping surfaces until the acute inflammation has settled;
  • avoid contact with the eyes and mouth.

It is also important to remember that when treating this infectious disease, cleaning and disinfecting the affected area and personal items is very important. Because a person's general condition is usually not affected by the itching, hospital treatment is not required. Instead, special solutions can be applied at home. In many cases, special scabies sprays are used to help relieve itching and redness.

It is worth paying close attention to the fact that each treatment has its own instructions and contraindications. This matters because allergic reactions or other symptoms can occur if these recommendations are not followed.

Precautions While Using Eurax Cream

In Australia, buy scabies medicine only after consulting your doctor. It is essential to clean and disinfect the affected body area when treating this infectious disease.

Follow the preventive recommendations listed below:

  • The clothes of an infected person must be chemically treated. In some cases, regular washing may not be enough.
  • The infected person should use separate utensils to avoid contact with healthy people.
  • It is important to use disposable gloves after procedures. When treatment is finished, wash your hands well with antibacterial soap.
  • Keep all scabies treatments together in one place.

If one family member becomes infected with scabies, the chance of it spreading to other household members increases greatly. Following the general preventive measures above and using crotamiton cream may help minimise these risks and speed up recovery. Avoid getting this medicine in the eyes or mouth.

Permethrin treatment for 7-30 days

Pregnancy and Lactation

In Australian product information, Eurax is not described using the former U.S. Pregnancy Category C wording. Animal reproduction studies have not been conducted, and it is not known whether Eurax can cause fetal harm when applied topically during pregnancy. Use only if clearly needed and on the advice of a doctor. Safety during breastfeeding has not been established, so speak with your healthcare professional; some clinicians may advise temporarily stopping breastfeeding during treatment.

Before using Eurax, Australian doctors recommend making sure it is the right treatment for your condition.

Overdose

After accidental ingestion of the emulsion, a seizure has been reported. It was treated with gastric lavage, activated charcoal, diazepam and metoclopramide (with a plasma concentration of 34 ng/ml of Crotamiton). When applied to the skin, pallor and cyanosis were noted in a newborn infant.

Eurax Cream Alternatives

There are several alternative creams and treatments for people who cannot tolerate Eurax itch cream. Anthisan cream or HC45 cream can be used for itching, stings and insect bites. Eurax is also available in combination with a steroid cream called Eurax HC cream.

Another medicine mentioned for scabies is Spregal. Its active ingredient is Esdepaletrin, a neurotoxic insect poison that disrupts cation exchange across nerve cell membranes. The second component, piperonyl butoxide, enhances the effect of Esdepaletrin and reduces the chance of resistance to this scabicide.

Nittyfor Crem is also mentioned as suitable for scabies treatment. Its active ingredient is permethrin. Nittyfor Crem is designed and officially approved for the treatment of pediculosis. It is applied to limited areas of skin, and the exposure time on the skin should not exceed 40 minutes.

Allergy medicines or oral antihistamines can help treat itching. In rare cases, a doctor may prescribe hormonal ointments with glucocorticoids, such as Hydrocortisone. If purulent rashes or wounds appear where the skin has been scratched, antibiotic ointments may be used. Neomycin and bacitracin have a broad spectrum of action. They can also be used at home after medical advice.

Special Precautions

Take care to avoid getting Eurax cream for itching into the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, mouth and urinary tract. If this happens, rinse the area thoroughly with running water.

Use the medicine in a well-ventilated room. A doctor's advice is needed before starting treatment, while taking other medicines, or if you have scalp conditions. You should also speak to a doctor if itching continues for more than 4 weeks after scabies treatment. If hypersensitivity reactions occur, treatment should be stopped.
