This medicine is available over the counter (OTC) to treat vaginal thrush. Use it carefully and follow the directions for best results.

In Australia, you must contact a doctor if your symptoms get worse, do not improve within 3 days, or last longer than 7 days.

What this medicine is for

This vaginal cream contains clotrimazole, an antifungal medicine used to treat vaginal thrush (vaginal candidiasis). It also helps relieve external itching and irritation caused by thrush.

Thrush is a common infection caused by a yeast (fungus) that can live harmlessly in the vagina. In some circumstances, it can overgrow and cause symptoms that may spread to the surrounding area.

Symptoms may include one or more of the following:

  • Itching in the vagina and surrounding area (the vulva)
  • Redness and swelling of the tissues of the vagina and vulva
  • Soreness of the vagina and vulva
  • A white vaginal discharge

Thrush is not usually considered a sexually transmitted infection, but it can sometimes be passed to a partner during sex. If your partner develops symptoms, they should speak with a health professional.

Before you use this medicine

Do not use:

  • If you have never had a vaginal yeast infection diagnosed by a doctor
  • If you are allergic to any of the ingredients

Ask a doctor before use if you have:

  • Vaginal itching and discomfort for the first time
  • Lower abdominal, back or shoulder pain, fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, or foul-smelling vaginal discharge (you may have a more serious condition)
  • Vaginal yeast infections often (such as once a month or 3 in 6 months)
  • Been exposed to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)

When using this product

  • Do not use tampons, douches, spermicides or other vaginal products
  • Do not have vaginal intercourse
  • Condoms and diaphragms may be damaged and may fail to prevent pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
  • You may notice a mild increase in vaginal burning, itching or irritation
  • If you do not get complete relief, ask a doctor before using another product

If pregnant or breast-feeding

Ask a health professional before use.

How to use this medicine

The carton contains a tube of vaginal cream and an applicator for internal vaginal use. Do not use if the foil seal on the tube opening is broken or missing.

Adults and children 12 years of age and over: Insert one applicatorful of cream into the vagina at bedtime for 7 days in a row. Wash the applicator after each use.

Children under 12 years of age: In Australia, ask a doctor.

If you have itching and irritation on the skin outside the vagina, you may apply a small amount of the cream to the affected external area 2 times daily for up to 7 days, as needed.

Possible side effects

Most people will not have any problems, but some may get mild side effects such as vaginal burning, itching or irritation.

Clotrimazole was first used in Australia in 1974.

Stop use and ask a doctor if:

  • Symptoms do not improve within 3 days
  • Symptoms last longer than 7 days
  • You develop a rash or hives, abdominal pain, fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, or foul-smelling vaginal discharge
